Messengers: Who We Listen To, Who We Don't, and Why by Stephen Martin & Joseph Marks

Messengers: Who We Listen To, Who We Don't and Why book cover

Identifying who we listen to and why is fundamental to understanding the key dynamics of leadership, power, and our day-to-day relationships. Messengers represents the fruits of the authors’ investigations into more than 60 years of research exploring why some people and their messages are listened to, accepted and acted upon and why others are easily ignored. They identify 8 “Messenger Effects” (4 status-driven, or “hard” and 4 connection-driven or “soft”) that underpin every aspect of social interaction, and which have the power to change the way we think about who we follow and trust. Essential reading in an age of rampant misinformation.

HIGHLIGHT(S): We are suckers for compliments. For example, one study found that 50% of employees were willing to assist a colleague who asked for help, while 79% were willing if the colleague paid them a complement first. Also - restaurant waiters who compliment the menu choices of diners receive bigger tips.
